- 2lbs cooking apples
- 3 oz sugar (or to preferred sweetness)
- 3 tbsps water
- 2 cups breadcrumbs
- 2 oz sugar
- 1 oz butter cubed
- 1 tsp nutmeg or mace
Peel, core and chop apples. Stew the apples with water until broken down and add sugar and stir. Mix the breadcrumbs, sugar and butter together to make the Charlotte mix, then add the nutmeg. Place a layer of apple sauce on the bottom of the pyrex dish and a layer of Charlotte mix on top, continue layering until all the ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of Charlotte mix.
Bake at 180 C/ Gas 4 / 350 F for 40 minutes and serve warm with hot custard.
