Civic Reception 2012
At a meeting of Cork City Council held on 14th November 2011, the Lord Mayor proposed and it was unanimously agreed by the Council, that a Civic Reception would be held for the English Market in Recognition of the Achievements of the English Market Traders in 2011. This Civic Reception was held on Thursday 26th January 2012.
Each trader was invited to attend, also present was the A/British Ambassador to Ireland Mr. Andrew Staunton. In the Lord Mayors speech, the Lord Mayor, Councillor Terry Shannon stated that ....
"It is true that the English Market is firstly, and most importantly, a Place of Commerce and Trade. But it is true also, that through engaging in many other diverse events and activities, the English Market and the Traders contribute richly to the City in the areas of social, community, cultural and artistic activities. These contributions create a unique connection between the Market and the broader City Community. It is both figuratively and literally at the heart of this great City..."
